Week 5
This week we talked about dating and marriage. I learned about the effects of cohabitation and, although widely accepted in our culture, it is more harmful than good to a marriage. Here are some of the facts:
Reasons for cohabitation:
1.
Prepare for marriage
2.
Test drive
3.
Think it’s the same as marriage
4.
Find out Sexual compatibility
5.
Alternative to marriage
6.
Viewed as the next natural phase in a
relationship
7.
Avoid complications for divorce
8.
Less commitment- don’t need to share
9.
Not wanting to be exclusive with that person-
keep doors open
Effects of cohabitation:
1.
Less physical intimacy than married couples
2.
Less mental and emotional health
3.
Marriage after cohabitation leads to a higher
divorce rate
4.
Maintain he physical behaviors and the thoughts
after marriage
5.
More likely to think of marriage as a contract
instead of a covenant
6.
More likely to spend money on alcohol and
tobacco
This is very interesting to me because I have a little sister who has been cohabiting with her boyfriend for over two and a half years. I feel like if she only could look at the research as well as the warnings given to us from the holy prophets then perhaps she would be able to make a crucial decision as to what path she will choose for her future.
I also learned the following about Love:
4 types of love:
Eros- Passionate sexual love (falling in love) driven by
emotion
Agape- Love independent of ones feelings for another. Love
them despite weaknesses
Storge- Parent child love-hurts you to see them hurting:
Nurturing love
Philia- friendship/brotherly love
You should have all 4 of these with the person that you love.
...Too often
people are driven by the first one.
